Janet H featuredHere at Executive Elements, we like to introduce you to fantastic women we think you should know. Some of these women are clients, some are friends, some are women we’ve only just met. Janet Hawk

My Current Job/Company:
Director, Market Analysis & Sales Programs, for OCLC. OCLC, headquartered in Dublin, Ohio, is a non-profit library cooperative with member libraries throughout the world. We provide research, programs and services that help libraries share and organize the world’s knowledge.

My Birthdate:
04.07.63

My Work
My team has two key areas of responsibility. First, we’re responsible for library-related market research, which includes primary research (e.g., surveys and focus groups) and secondary research (e.g., monitoring the library and technology industries and reporting to the OCLC employees). The results of our market research are shared with librarians, helping them to support funding requests. Additionally, we’re responsible for sales planning, analysis & reporting and for lead generation campaigns in North & South America. Each day brings new and exciting challenges. And, I’m fortunate to work with great colleagues who truly care about libraries and their mission.

My Passion:
Libraries and rescue dogs. I feed my passion for libraries each day at OCLC. I also volunteer as the director for Friends of the Shelter, an all-volunteer, non-profit that funds the medical care for sick and injured dogs at the Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center in Columbus. Each year, we save over 350 dogs at a cost of about $150,000. This volunteer work allows me to feed my passion to save and re-home adoptable dogs.

My Family:
My immediate family is my wonderful husband and best friend of 25+ years, Mickey, and four rescued furry “kids” – 2 dogs (Rex & Parker) and 2 cats (Ted & Tobey). I began volunteering with Friends of the Shelter after we adopted Rex; Rex’s medical care was funded by Friends of the Shelter while he was waiting to be adopted.

My Heroes:
My grandmother. And all of the wonderful volunteers who walk the shelter dogs every day in all kinds of weather.

My Escape:
My husband and I love to travel. We’ve been fortunate to visit many states and several countries. Some of my favorite trips have been tours of the western U.S., a trip to Australia and visits to see my brother and his wife in France. On a daily basis, I love to read mysteries when I have time.

My Pet Peeve:
Dishonesty.

My Indulgence:
Dessert, particularly chocolate anything.

My Roots:
My roots are in “small town America.” I grew up in Shelby, a small town of less than 10,000 in north central Ohio.

My Future:
I see my future as happy and busy!

My Quote on Life:
“You must be the change that you wish to see in the world.” (Mahatma Gandhi)

My Accessory:
My wedding rings. A smile. Whenever possible, a dog or two.

My Advice to Young Women:
Find work that makes you happy. You spend much of your life working, so make it enjoyable!

How I Balance it All:
Balancing priorities and responsibilities is always challenging. I make lists and celebrate the little victories. The lists help me prioritize and ensure that nothing key is forgotten. And, along the way, I try to remember to have fun.

I was born and raised in Michigan and I now live in Ohio. Living in the Midwest has allowed me to connect with friends, clients and colleagues who share the same values that I do and build relationships centered around integrity, trust and strong work ethic.

My Future:
Busy, optimistic and exciting.

My Quote on Life:
“Be the one who nurtures and encourages. Be the one who has a forgiving heart. Be the one who always looks for the best in people. Be the one who always leaves people in a better place than you found them.”

My Accessories:
High heels and a smile!

My Advice to Young Women:
Focus on your wellness (health, relationships, spiritual) so that you can bring your best to your family and the workplace every day. Make it a priority to replace low-value activities with real “wants”.

How I Balance it All:
I have support from my husband, my mom, my children and my friends. My husband and I coordinate calendars all of the time and we re-synchronize calendars Sunday night to identify any conflicts that may have slipped through the cracks. This ensures we cover the important meetings, kids sporting events and school activities. I start every day with an early morning run and this gets me going for the day. It gives me energy for the day and is 30 minutes that is well worth the investment. Time management is knowing how much you can handle effectively and happily—and then designing your life around your capacity.

I don’t know that balance it all! I try. My husband is a gem, and I’m actually trying to not check my email 11 PM-6 AM so I get enough sleep (as we’ve learned it’s so important!). Having everything on a schedule really helps me (even picking up drycleaning, etc).

Find a small set of mentors who can be trusted advisors. Source them from within your company, but also from across your network so you can have a broad perspective. But you can’t stop by establishing mentors – it’s important to have advocates too. Every day be smart and be kind to build an advocacy base of people who see your contributions directly. These tend to be the leaders who may take a risk to grow you and will invest in you because they know your commitment, ambition, and capabilities.

We have a strong use of Google Calendar to manage the family activities. I have a great support system with family who help close gaps and enhance our lives. My Accessory:
A watch and a sense of humor.

My Job
EVP Investment Advisors-Fifth Third Bank

My Birthday
7/19/64

My Work
I am responsible for running the Private Bank. I manage a team of highly credentialed specialists that work with our affluent clients by offering wealth planning, investments and private banking, risk management and trust services.

My Passion
My Family, my Greek heritage, and my friendships

My Family
Jim-wonderful husband of 23 years. Charlie (16) and Alexandra (13) – yes, I am raising two teenagers and enjoying (almost) every minute – so far so good!

My Heroes
My parents. My mom is 84 and has boundless energy. Unfortunately, I lost my dad 10 years ago. He was awesome and showed me unconditional love. I miss him every day.

My Escape
Blasting my favorite playlist from a golf cart while I hit as many golf balls as it takes to make a decent shot while watching the sunset. Added bonus….if one of the kids decides to tag along!

My Indulgence
Good food and drink with family and friends. I can sit around a table and talk for hours!

My Roots

I grew up in Mount Vernon, Ohio – great memories and a wonderful foundation – stable, simple, fun.

My Future
Life is good…the future is all about enjoying each day while creating choices for myself and opportunities for those I love.

My Favorite Quote
“Promise to give so much time improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.” (John Wooden)

My Accessories
Watches and cool bracelets (well, I think they are cool…my daughter often disagrees).

My Advice To Young Women
Enjoy the journey and don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself. As a woman, you aren’t likely to love success in a career as an isolated entity. Your personal relationships are unique to you and will define YOUR individual happiness. Don’t compare yourself to others.

How I Balance it All
I have an incredibly supportive and loving husband who serves as my sounding board. I lean on my mother for wise council and my closest friends for sage advice. I am not afraid to ask for help or admit that I am in over my head. I know that it is a constant balancing act. I measure balance over a period of time that allows me the opportunity to adjust to all that life throws your way.

Woman of the Week: Jocelyn Sperko

Here at Executive Elements, we like to introduce you to fantastic women we think you should know. Some of these women are clients, some are friends, some are women we’ve only just met. But they all have this in common: they are dynamic, interesting people who have agreed to share with us their insights and secrets to success.

Jocelyn Sperko

My Current Job/Company:
Leadership, People + Culture at Gerber, LLC

My Birthday:
11.12.1980

My Work:
In a nutshell, my job is to make sure our clients and our employees are happy. I do this by enriching the lives of our employees through wellness, culture, and benefits. And with our clients, that means deepening their experience through meaningful events, timely information, and useful technology.

My Passion:
Family, friends, making others laugh and smile, contributing positively to someone else’s day, traveling and experiencing as much of this crazy, beautiful world as possible!

My Family:
My Dad (who has taught me to work hard, do what’s right and, above all else, have fun), my three brothers (who ‘toughened’ me up as a kid), my sister-in-law, plus three nieces (who I spoil immensely) my two rescue pups (professional snugglers and full time fur bags) and a close circle of incredible friends

My Heroes:
My parents, hands down. They worked hard to provide my brothers and me with an amazingly rich and fulfilling childhood. They taught us a foundation of values but let us think for ourselves. We were never told what to do with our lives but were taught to support and take care of ourselves – it didn’t matter what we wanted to be when we grew up, as long as we were happy. My parents set the bar really high for what it means to be a spouse, a parent, a family, a friend.

My Escape:
Laying around with a good book, watching the sunset (or rise) from a beach or mountain-top

My Pet Peeve:
Pessimism, entitlement, not taking responsibility or ownership for your actions

My Indulgence:
Pizza. And a perfectly mixed Manhattan (with the ‘good’ cherries, of course).

My Roots:
Humble. Family-oriented. Jovial.

My Future:
Exciting. Fulfilling. Adventurous. Purposeful.

My Quote on Life:
“Happiness depends upon ourselves” (Aristotle)

My Accessory:
Fall, winter, spring: my beanie. Summer: a turquoise cuff that belonged to my mom…it makes me think of her, which makes me smile J

My Advice to Young Women:
Don’t take life too seriously, it’s meant to be one big adventure. Work hard for what you believe in and put your best foot forward…but don’t forget to have plenty of fun along the way!

How I Balance it All:
Balancing everything implies that one part of my life must give for another to take. So I think of it more as “finding balance” or making sure all parts of my life work together in harmony. I make time for the things that are important to me and I have learned to say “no” to the things that aren’t. I don’t hesitate to put a workout or lunch with a friend on the office calendar – it means I’m not available for an hour or two – but the needed escape ensures I can give 110% when I am back at the office.

Don’t feel like you have to have life figured out. Give yourself permission to evolve.

How I Balance it All:
I am committed to getting a good night sleep every day. 7 hours at the minimum. I find that when I am rested, there is nothing I can’t handle!
