Woman of the Week – Janet Meeks

Here at Executive Elements, we like to feature fantastic women we think you should know. Some of these women are clients, some are friends, some are women we’ve only just met. But they all have this in common: they are dynamic, interesting women who have agreed to share with us their insights and secrets to success.

My Name:
Janet Smith Meeks

My Current Job/Company:
Co-Founder and CEO of Healthcare Alignment Advisors and Author of Gracious Leadership: Lead Like You’ve Never Led Before to be released in early 2018.

My Work:
I advise C-Suite Executives regarding strategies to help their organizations reach peak performance within a fully respectful culture. I am currently immersed in writing a book about Gracious Leadership, a compendium of lessons about leadership and life that I have learned from my parents, from my favorite mentors and from my own leadership journey.

My Passion:
My family and helping other people to become all they were created to be.

My Family:
Dick D’Enbeau (supportive husband and soulmate), Meredith (amazing daughter, wife of Steven and mother of Stella), Mallory (equally amazing daughter, wife of Matthew and mother of Gracie) and my “big brother”, Jim. I also am blessed that my family includes Dick’s four children, his four grandchildren and his sister, Marilou.

My Hero or Heroes:
My parents (James Edwin Smith, Sr. and Marcelene Cobb Smith, both deceased). They taught me to appreciate early on in life that every person is fearfully and wonderfully made in the eyes of God and that as such, every person is to be fully respected. They also taught my brother and me to do what is right, to do what is fair and to be consistent at all times, even and especially when it is not easy and the stakes are high.

My Escape:
Jogging while I listen to the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, or traveling with my husband, especially when we can cycle.

My Pet Peeve:
Arrogance and people who do not follow up.

My Indulgence:
Hattie Bell’s Caramel Cake, a very special recipe from a revered woman who lived in my hometown.

My Roots:
I grew up in a community of 3,000 residents and found myself surrounded by adults who told the young people of the town to dream big because we could be anything that we wanted to become. I am extraordinarily grateful to have been raised within a very inclusive Mississippi family in which my father was ahead of his time as he advocated for Equal Rights for all people at a point in history when such advocacy was not popular.

My Future:
Excited, energized and continuously looking for every possible way to make a positive difference.

My Favorite Quote:
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
~Theodore Roosevelt

My Accessory:
My mother’s ring which my father gave me when I turned 21. She died of cancer when I was 19.

My Advice to Young Women:
Always ask for opportunity. And know that even though you are a proven performer, you will not necessarily be given the promotion you want or the coveted stretch assignment you desire. Sometimes you just have to ask!

How I Balance it All:
I have learned to say “Yes” and to make time for the things I really want to do. I have also learned to say “No” when it’s necessary. I’ve realized that the little things in life are really the big things, and that the little things really deserve more of my time and attention.

Comparisons steal our joy and creativity. In a world dominated by facebook likes and air-brushed images, we feel pressure to be perfectly accomplished, perfectly thin, perfectly unblemished. None of it is true. Throw away comparisons. You are wonderfully made. Resolve to follow your unique journey.

How I Balance it All:
Each day involves choices. One day it all feels perfectly aligned and the next is chaotic. I combine my work and personal calendars so I have a full view. Leaving margins in my day helps me address the unexpected. When I am frazzled, I think of three things for which I am thankful.

Women of the Week – Paying it Forward

We’ve talked a lot recently about the power connections. We are reminded of the this each Monday when our Woman of the Week offers advice to women who are just starting out. Here are a few words of advice and inspiration to start your week off on a high note…

Ryan Montgomery
Do not limit yourself… learning often happens just outside of your comfort zone. You MUST be willing to step outside of yourself to find out what you’re truly capable of doing. Ask yourself, what’s the worst thing that could happen? Failure only occurs when you’re not willing to try.

Lynette Justice
Try to stay positive and look for the good in all people and each experience.

Michelle Montgomery
Dig deep & learn lots of things. It’s possible to create the life you’re dreaming of, but you need to be willing to put in the work to get there.

Rachel Sabo
Be confident and don’t let anyone make you feel inferior. You will encounter those who do not see your vision- ignore them and keep going. One day, they will probably be working for someone like you. Most important, BE YOURSELF and stay true to who you are and what you believe in.

Kelley Griesmer
Your thoughts are all you have, so try to make them brave. (Cribbed from Jason Mraz lyrics.)

Women of the Week – Words that Inspire!

Stephanie Leader
“Wherever you go, there you are.”
A friend told me this and it reminds me to embrace what I am doing and take it in. Not to always be looking for something more. I am not sure who it was originally coined the quote, but it has stuck with me.

Meredith Piccin
“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the Don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me…Anything can happen child. Anything can be.”
~Shell Silverstein

Stacey Borowicz
This little light of mine; I’m gonna let it shine.
~Harry Dixon Loes.

Erin Wanke
The first step towards getting somewhere is deciding you are no longer going to stay where you are.

The difference between who you are and who you want to be is what you do.
